Chaos Group presents photorealistic computer graphics rendering at up to 90 frames per second on Nvidia Turing-based Quadro RTX GPUs. Forest animation rendered in realtime with Chaos new Lavina technology. The scene has over 300 billion triangles and 80, 000 instances running at 24–30 frames per second with no rasterized graphics or reduced level of detail as might be used for game engine rendering. In this case, the render was performed on Nvidias Quadro RTX GPUs. Chaos Group showcased its new technology, Project Lavina, at Siggraph this year. The company says this is a major breakthrough for realtime rendering because the scene can be rendered directly as it is created without being exported to a game engine. In other words, it is rendered true to the artists vision without the intermediate conversion that would happen with import to a game engine. Game engines have their own tricks to accomplish realtime renders, which can affect the final look. Instead, Project Lavina promises direct compatibility and translation of V-Ray assets. The tech demo uses 3D scenes directly exported from V-Ray enabled applications. Once the scene is loaded in Lavina, users can explore the environment as they would in a game engine, and see the physically accurate lighting, reflections, and global illumination as they will appear when rendered. The company says this is their second realtime announcement in the last year. The company also announced V-Ray for Unreal, now in beta. As a result, the company says customers have a choice in the workflow they use: game engine or directly from the supported application. Lavina is the Bulgarian word for avalanche and the company is convinced their new technology has the potential to sweep away current workflows and open up new capabilities for 3D artists and content creators. “Weve been developing ray tracing for 20 years, and this is one of the biggest breakthroughs weve ever made, ” says Vlado Koylazov, co-founder and CTO at Chaos Group. The opportunity for Chaos Group is that they are taking over a significant piece of the gaming engine value proposition and enabling different types of applications to access realtime rendering. The company mentions applications such as virtual productions and VR, 3D configurators and were thinking CAD walkthroughs, product demos, etc., also fall into this category. Peter Mitev, CEO of Chaos Group credits Nvidia and their new Turing architecture with making Lavina possible. From here on, he says, Project Lavinas mission will be to focus on pushing the quality and speed of realtime ray tracing. In other news Chaos also announced V-Ray for Houdini. Houdini is especially strong in particle effects including clouds and vapor, stuff that has volume. It has its own renderer called Mantra, but according to Chaos Groups CCO Lon Grohs, customers want to use the same renderer throughout the entire content creation pipeline to ensure a consistent look. Its pretty much the same argument that Chaos is using about game engines: its better to be able to render everything in one program, and Chaos is building their product to support as many products as possible. The challenge for any company is that specialized products may not have enough customers to justify a special build. Chaos had made their product for rendering Houdini content available on GitHub. The fact that theyve completely productized a version, suggests the base for Houdini is growing. Also, the Side Effects team is also aggressively moving to make Houdini interoperable with a wide range of products. Its a chicken and egg kind of thing. The company says their new renderer for Houdini is faster with support for both GPUs and CPUs. And notes Grohs, GPU rendering is especially well suited to volume rendering, Houdinis specialty. They say Chaos brings fast, accurate illumination and rendering of VDB volumes. (VDB is an open source exchange framework for volumes. In addition, V-Ray for Houdini includes Alembic support. Hair shaders enable realistic hair with accurate highlights. Particle support includes drive shader parameters such as color, alpha, and particle size through customer, per point attributes. V-Ray scene support means that content from outside applications such as Maya and 3ds Max can be transported rationalized to match Houdini. The new renderer supports Houdinis packed primitives, which enable faster performance at render time.

TRACCE STORICHE La devozione alla Madonna della Lavina è legata all'evento prodigioso del ritrovamento, nel XVII secolo, di una sacra icona tra le acque di un piccolo torrente. Sulle origini del quadro della Madonna della Lavina e sulla storia del suo ritrovamento pochi sono attualmente i documenti rinvenuti che ne permettano una fedele ricostruzione. Siamo quindi nel campo delle tradizioni popolari, non prive di suggestione e d'interesse, che tuttavia si muovono sulla base di una realtà storica. Il Pitrè, nel volume “Feste patronali in Sicilia”, riferisce che tra i ruderi di un vecchio monastero di Benedettine, situato ove ora sorge il Santuario della Lavina, venne alla luce un quadro della Madonna, che Vito Amico fa risalire al 1300. Trattasi del dipinto di origine bizantina oggi custodito nell'Abbazia di San Benedetto, artistica Chiesa del XVII secolo, dedicata anche a “Santa Maria di Lavina”, recentemente restaurato dal Centro Regionale del Restauro. Lo stesso titolo di Maria invocata come “fonte” trova le sue più genuine origini nella tradizione della Chiesa orientale. Nel "Lexicon topograficum Siculum" Catania, 1740) lo storico Vito Amico scrisse: « il Monastero di monache è adorno del titolo di Santa Maria di Lavina, sotto gli istituti di San Benedetto; erano quelle un tempo fuori il paese; stanno oggi sotto il tempio principale, e mostrano un'antichissima tavola di Madonna, illustre per meravigliosi prodigi ». Un'altra ipotesi accreditata da riferimenti storici, è quella che la preziosa icona fu donata alle suore Benedettine da Giorgio Maniace, generale normanno che durante il XIV secolo fece edificare a Cerami due monasteri: quello di località Rahali e quello in località Carcia, oggi Lavina in cui si insediarono le suore Benedettine. Con linterto di preservare l'icona dalla lotte iconoclastiche, che anche in Sicilia conobbero momenti di ferocia e di tremende devastazioni, le suore Benedettine del monastero di Lavina inchiodarono il quadro della Madonna ad una trave del soffitto, rendendone quindi difficile ed impossibile il ritrovamento. In seguito le suore abbandonarono il monastero di Lavina per la sua vetustà e si trasferirono nel centro abitato, nel monastero annesso all'abbazia di San Benedetto. Il vecchio monastero di Lavina, abbandonato, andò in rovina seppellendo, tra i suoi ruderi, l'icona della Madonna. TRADIZIONE POPOLARE Una pia tradizione, confortata da precisi riferimenti storici nei manoscritti del Pitrè, vuole che la Madonna sia apparsa più volte in sogno ad una delle suore Benedettine, che si erano nel frattempo trasferite nel monastero annesso all'Abbazia, e labbia invitata a riferire all'arciprete del luogo di curarsi della dissotterrazione dalle rovine del vecchio monastero di una sacra immagine che la rappresentava. L'invito fu accolto con scetticismo dal sacerdote, e dopo la terza apparizione cadde una pioggia torrenziale e dalle macerie del monastero rinvenne galleggiando la trave su cui era inchiodato il quadro della Madonna. Lindomani un contadino, che attraversava il luogo del vecchio monastero, notò che la sua mula, si inginocchiò sul posto dove giaceva, sotto il fango e la melma, la sacra immagine. Il contadino, stupito ed impressionato dall'atteggiamento dell'animale, chiamò a raccolta quanti lavoravano nelle vicinanze. Si cominciò a scavare e, con stupore dei presenti, si rinveniva il quadro della Madonna. Ancora oggi molti anziani del paese riferiscono il fatto che sulla sacra icona ritrovata vi e impressa l'impronta dello zoccolo della mula. Non appena l'arciprete ebbe notizia dell'episodio, scosso e pentito, fece suonare le campane a distesa e assieme ad una gran folla di fedeli si recò a Lavina e con grande devozione fu raccolta la sacra icona. (A ricordo di questo evento si celebra nel mese di maggio in Cerami la festa dell'Incontro in cui viene portata in processione l'icona bizantina custodita nell'Abbazia di S. Benedetto, insieme ai simulacri dell'Arcangelo Michele e San Giuseppe. L'immagine fu quindi chiamata “ Santa Maria di Lavina”, dal luogo del suo ritrovamento, in dialetto “u lavinaru” che significa torrente, per le acque che vi scorrevano e vi scorrono tutt'ora. Si dava così origine ad un titolo, non nuovo ma di certo raro almeno per il circondario, sotto il quale invocare l'ausilio della Madre di Dio. La tradizione ci dice ancora che il ritrovamento del quadro è stato coronato da alcuni eventi miracolosi: uno dei più noti narra di un certo Giuseppe, cieco da tredici anni, che, appena sparsasi la notizia di quel che era avvenuto a Lavina, fu condotto dai parenti laggiù e baciata la Sacra Immagine, riacquistò la vista.
